Can You Dye, Straighten or Curl Clip in Hair Extensions?

Are you sick of looking at new fashion magazines, loving the new hairstyles, and then moaning to yourself that those styles will just not work with your look? Have you investigated hair extensions? If you decide to go with it then you might have questions about possible styles that can be achieved. Can you dye hair extensions? Can they be curled or straightened? These are very important questions. It is important to know what you want from your new purchase before deciding on which ones to choose.

There are quite a number of different kinds of extensions available. There are the kinds, which can be added to your existing hair to lengthen it or the kinds that can be added to your scalp directly. Perhaps you have lost hair and need to cover a bald spot or have thin hair that needs thickening up. The main question you need to ask yourself is whether you want to be able to change your style often. If you want to be able to style your hair extensions, or colour them, then you need to purchase real human hair extensions, not synthetic.

Synthetic Hair Versus Human Hair

Synthetic clip in hair extensions do not take dye well. It also will not allow you to change its style. For example, if you purchased synthetic hair extensions to create a bouncy curly look for a special party, you cannot have them straightened. The change will not take effect. Synthetic has its style baked or manufactured right into it, and it cannot be changed. Synthetic hair extensions can be the answer to the need for a wonderful hairdo for a party or appearance at a show. It does not work for long term.

Real Human hair, on the other hand can take just about any type of style change your own hair can. You can colour it if you like, or curl it, or straighten it. You can also perm them as well. Consult with your stylist about how your particular extensions will take different types of treatment. Good practise in application should involve using hair that is similar to your own. For example, if you have thick hair, you do not want to have thin extensions added. Likewise, if you have a cool colour like ash blond or black, you do not want red hair used to add length (unless you are looking for highlights!).

As long as the colour and quality of the extensions is similar to your own, then you can easily create a new look with dye, perms and other permanent or temporary changes. Speak to your stylist, and make sure you let him or her know what you want to be able to accomplish. Your stylist will be glad to answer any questions you have about hair extensions. Make sure you have consulted with the hair stylist for some expert opinion before you make any drastic changes.
